What is SeaCell™?
SeaCell™ is created by incorporating powdered Icelandic seaweed into a wood-derived cellulose fibre.
The seaweed is not simply applied to the finished material as a temporary surface treatment. It is embedded within the fibre structure during the Lyocell production process.
This matters because the seaweed-derived compounds remain part of the fibre rather than being added as a coating that immediately washes away.
At Alexander Clementine, SeaCell™ is blended with TENCEL™ Lyocell to create a fabric intended to feel:

Where does the seaweed come from?
The seaweed used in SeaCell™ is sourced from the cold Icelandic waters, including the small islands around Breiðafjörður.
It is certified organic and harvested above the regenerative part of the plant.
Harvesting takes place on a four-year cycle, allowing the seaweed time to regrow between harvests.
This approach allows the plant to remain rooted and continue regenerating, rather than removing the entire organism from its environment.

SeaCell demonstrated measurable antioxidant activity
In laboratory testing conducted by Intertek using the DPPH assay method, SeaCell achieved a 91% free-radical-removing rate.
The DPPH method is commonly used to measure antioxidant activity in materials and cosmetic ingredients.
Separate testing found that the fabric retained between 78% and 88% of its measured antioxidant activity after 50 machine-wash cycles at 30°C.
Independent in-vitro research undertaken by the University of Jena’s dermatology clinic also reported significant antioxidant activity against reactive oxygen and reactive nitrogen species.
These results describe a measured property of the fibre.
TENCEL absorbed more moisture than cotton in testing
TENCEL recorded a moisture regain of 11.9%, compared with 7.1% for cotton in the cited fibre testing.
This represents approximately 67% greater moisture absorption than cotton.
The moisture is absorbed within the internal structure of the fibre rather than remaining entirely on its surface.

TENCEL tested cooler than polyester under controlled conditions
In controlled exercise testing using infrared thermography, TENCEL measured 23.3°C at the skin surface, compared with 31.5°C for polyester.
That represents a difference of just over 8°C under the specific test conditions.
This does not mean that wearing Alexander Clementine underwear lowers a person’s body temperature by 8°C.
It demonstrates a measured difference in how the tested fabrics managed heat and moisture against the skin during exercise.
The result relates to fabric performance, not core body temperature or the prevention of hot flushes.
The fabric has been tested for sensitive skin contact
SeaCell™ holds OEKO-TEX Standard 100, Class 1 certification.
Class 1 is the most stringent OEKO-TEX product class and applies to textiles intended for babies and young children, where close and prolonged skin contact is expected.
Independent CYTOX laboratory testing also reported no cytotoxic effect from the fibre.
This means the material did not damage or destroy the tested cells under the laboratory conditions used.
For us, these standards matter because underwear remains in direct contact with delicate skin for long periods.
TENCEL has been independently measured as softer than cotton
TENCEL™ Lyocell has been compared with cotton using several methods, including expert sensory panels, Handle-o-meter testing, ring pull-through testing and acoustic softness measurement.
Across the methods cited in the data sheet, TENCEL Lyocell was found to feel softer and smoother than cotton.
For skin that is already dry, thinning or more reactive during menopause, reducing mechanical friction can have a meaningful effect on how comfortable a garment feels.
Softness is not only an aesthetic preference.
It affects the relationship between fabric and skin throughout the day.
How the fabric helps manage moisture and heat
The structure of TENCEL draws moisture away from the skin and distributes it across a wider internal surface.

Research published in the Journal of Applied Microbiology examined bacterial growth in human sweat across several different textile fibres.
Within that study, TENCEL showed a pronounced reduction in the diversity of bacteria associated with odour compared with the other materials tested.
This does not mean that the fabric sterilises the skin or treats infection.
It suggests that the moisture environment created by TENCEL may be less favourable to some odour-associated bacterial communities than fabrics such as polyester.
